On 30 April 2026, a multi-stakeholder river cleanup mobilised community members, local institutions, youth, students, informal waste workers and volunteers to remove plastic and other improperly disposed waste from the Budhi Rapti River corridor. The campaign combined direct environmental action with public education on river conservation, waste management and biodiversity protection.<\/p>\n
Protecting a river corridor of national ecological importance<\/p>\n
The Budhi Rapti River connects to the wider Rapti River system that flows through the Chitwan National Park landscape. The park lies only about 1.7 kilometres downstream from the cleanup area, making local waste management directly relevant to the health of a globally significant protected ecosystem.<\/p>\n
The river system supports freshwater habitats and contributes to a landscape used by endangered and iconic wildlife, including the Bengal tiger, Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros and Gharial Crocodile, as well as numerous migratory and resident bird species. Plastic pollution and unmanaged waste therefore pose risks not only to the appearance of the river corridor, but also to biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and community wellbeing.<\/p>\n
The campaign brought together a diverse group of people who experience the river in different ways: residents, informal waste workers, municipal representatives, environmental advocates, students and volunteers. Their participation demonstrated that river pollution cannot be addressed by one institution alone; it requires coordination across communities, public authorities and waste recovery systems.<\/p>\n
The campaign demonstrated the close relationship between everyday waste management practices, river health, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and human wellbeing. It also highlighted that plastic entering inland waterways can contribute to the wider challenge of marine plastic pollution as waste moves through connected river systems.<\/p>\n
Although the direct removal of 170 kilograms of waste created an immediate improvement, the longer-term contribution is preventive: increasing awareness, encouraging segregation and responsible disposal, and supporting recovery systems that keep waste out of rivers in the first place.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
