Training for Plastic Waste Workers: Plastic Literacy, Circular Economy and Occupational Safety
Project Overview
During a three-day Chitwan field engagement in February and March 2026, Climate Action worked with waste workers at the Safa Urja Material Recovery Facility to strengthen plastic identification, source segregation, circular-economy awareness and occupational health and safety.
Waste workers are central to recovering recyclable materials and keeping plastic in productive use. Yet their work often involves direct contact with mixed waste, sharp objects, contaminated materials, dust and repetitive physical tasks. The project therefore linked environmental knowledge with practical measures for safer and more dignified work.
The training was designed as an interactive engagement rather than a one-way lecture. Participants shared their daily sorting practices and challenges, allowing discussions on plastic categories, market values, workplace risks and protective measures to respond directly to their experience.
The circular-economy component highlighted how waste can be transformed into a resource and how waste workers connect households, collection systems, material recovery facilities, recyclers and markets. This framing recognised workers not only as handlers of discarded materials but as essential actors in resource recovery and environmental protection.
Participants discussed the market dynamics of recyclable plastics, including differences in price and recycling potential among material types. Understanding these distinctions can support better sorting decisions and strengthen awareness of where value is created within the recycling chain.
A practical demonstration showed how protective gear should be used and how safer handling techniques can reduce risk. The wider field visit also considered the availability of gender-friendly amenities for both women and men.
