Project Overview

This ongoing project supports smallholder farmers to improve soil health, manage agricultural residues responsibly and strengthen resilience to climate variability. Practical training combines vermicomposting, biochar, bio-briquette production, integrated pest management and reduced dependence on chemical inputs.

Why This Project Matters

Declining soil fertility, costly farm inputs, open burning of crop residues and unpredictable rainfall undermine agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods. Farmers need affordable, practical techniques that convert local organic materials into useful soil amendments and energy products.

What the Project Is Doing

  • Conducting practical sessions on climate-smart agriculture, organic fertilizers and integrated pest management.
  • Establishing 10 additional household-level vermicompost bed units.
  • Demonstrating biochar, bio-briquette and vermicompost production techniques.
  • Promoting residue recovery as an alternative to open burning.
  • Supporting gradual reduction of chemical fertilizer use through improved organic input management.
  • Facilitating farmer-to-farmer learning and exchange on locally appropriate resilient practices.
